About the Organization:

Roddenberry Foundation was created in a response to the urgency and complexity of the issues we now face and the growing and exponential impact our actions have on each other and our planet. Their work is organized in three primary ways: The Catalyst Fund, The Roddenberry Fellowship, and The Roddenberry Prize.  Together, these interconnected initiatives offer opportunities for original thinkers and innovators from all walks of life to pursue significant, lasting change.

About the Grant:

The Catalyst Fund makes grants between $2,500- $15,000 to anyone, anywhere in the world who has an idea or early-stage project that has a high potential for large-scale impact and sustainable change. We know that $5k or $10k won’t necessarily be enough to launch a new product, build a great program, or even form a new organization. But it is enough to kick-start early stage ideas, pilot projects, or prototypes and help those of you who have an innovative idea for real change to take the first step(s) in doing so.

The Fund accepts applications on a continuous basis with no deadlines.

About Big, Bold Ideas:

Bold ideas depart from the status-quo and require us to look at a problem and its solution in a new light. Big ideas have a high potential for large-scale impact and sustainable change. Combined, ideas that are big and bold hold the promise of substantively improving the conditions for that in need in new and unheralded ways.

Who can apply to the Catalyst Fund?

Anyone. No one has a lock on a great idea. The Catalyst Fund has been created to source ideas from all corners of the globe.  You can be a seasoned social entrepreneur or a first-time changemaker. There are no disqualifiers. No prerequisites.

What types of projects are a good fit?

A project that improves on what’s already out there and has the potential for tangible impact is a good fit. A cutting-edge product, an experimental program, or a new service is all in our wheelhouse. Ideas that can be replicated, taken to scale, or leverage existing infrastructure are also a good fit. We also favor projects that inspire others, build on partnerships (public and private), and that are inclusive of those they are intended to benefit.

What types of projects are NOT a good fit?

Projects that are small in scope, limited in scale, or are not innovative in some way are unlikely to be funded. If the problem you’re trying to address is too narrowly defined or if it’s not clear how your solution will lead to measurable change we’re going to pass. Movie scripts, TV shows, video projects, webisodes, or podcasts are not likely to be considered. Projects that are well on their way to completion are also not a good fit.

What are the sizes of Catalyst grants?

Requests submitted through the Catalyst Fund range from $2,500 to $15,000. Requests above $15,000 will be automatically disqualified. Please align your request with what you need – if you need $7,000 don’t ask for $12,000. In deciding how much to request, consider how much funding you need right now and how you will use it to advance your idea.

How long do I have to complete the grant?

You will have 9 months to complete the activities outlined in the grant.
